Military Power: Is It Power for Women?

With women making up 15% of the U.S. military, and with 91% of all military career fields open to women, feminists need to take a long straight look at what joining the military means for women. Is it an opportunity to gain equality with men in an important segment of the economy and of society? If so, what does it mean when 30% of female veterans report experiencing rape or attempted rape during their service? And with male U.S. soldiers recently accused of raping and killing an Iraqi girl and murdering her family, what is the relationship between the rapes of women soldiers and the rapes of civilian women? In the current issue of off our backs women write about these issues, as well as about female soldiers dying from dehydration to avoid rape and a sergeant pimping female soldiers to his superiors.
